چکیده
We review recent progress on testing the hypothesis of the existence of cosmic string perturbations in microwave background maps. Using an analytical model for the string network we show that the predicted amplitude and spectrum of MBR fluctuations are consistent with the COBE data for a reasonable value of the single free parameter of the string model (the mass per unit length of the string µ). To distinguish the predictions of cosmic strings from those of Gaussian models it is necessary to apply specific statistical tests which are sensitive to non-random phases of the MBR temperature maps. We discuss two such statistical tests: First, the probability distribution and the moments of fluctuations δT T and second the corresponding statistical quantities for the gradient of fluctuations along a fixed direction. We show that the second statistic can detect cosmic string specific signatures on MBR temperature maps with resolution of a few arcminutes or smaller.

If the universe is multiply-connected and sufficiently small, then the last scattering surface wraps around the universe and intersects itself. Each circle of intersection appears as two distinct circles on the microwave sky. The present article shows how to use the matched circles to explicitly reconstruct the global topology of space.

We study the uniqueness and robustness of acoustic signatures in the cosmic microwave background by allowing for the possibility that they are generated by some as yet unknown source of gravitational perturbations. The acoustic pattern of peak locations and relative heights predicted by the standard inflationary cold dark matter model is essentially unique and its confirmation would have deep i...

We present new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy results from the combined analysis of the three flights of the first Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1). This balloon-borne bolometric instrument measured about 10 square degrees of sky at half-degree resolution in 4 frequency bands from 5.2 cm to 20 cm with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present an overview of our anal...

+ θ̄ 16π2 TrFμνF̃ μν (2) Since this θ̄ term violates CP invariance, the upper bound of the neutron electric dipole moment puts a strong constraint on the magnitude of θ̄, |θ̄| < 10. The smallness of θ̄ has led to the strong CP problem, “Why is θ̄ so small?” [1] We know that many small parameters in physics have led to new ideas, in most cases leading to new symmetries. For example, MW/MP ≪ 1 has led t...
